STEP 3: Write the Counterstory Paper
TITLE:
● Need a Title that hints to the reader your topic and main argument/ thesis. You can be creative with the title to catch the audience/reader’s attention.
● You need a separate title page with your name, course title, and I.D.
MAIN THESIS:
●The starting point of any good research paper is always What you do not know or understand but feel you must.
●Your research topic is too broad if you can state it in fewer than 4 to 5 words.
● STEP1: Name Your Topic (What are you writing about)
● STEP 2: Suggest a Question (What you don’t know about it)
● STEP 3: Motivate the Question (Why you want to know about it)
(Why is it important to ask your question at all or so what?)
PAPER FORMAT:
1) TITLE PAGE (1 page)
2) INTRODUCTION (2 pages)
-Use a “narrative hook” to attract the reader
-Begin with a story, current event or pressing issue being debated, a popular film etc..
-The Introduction provides a brief description of the research topic. What is the general idea of your research? Why is the topic interesting to you? What makes the topic and the questions of importance to researchers, policy makers, and community activists?
-At the end of the Introduction Section include a paragraph with Reseach Question or ”Guiding Thesis”
3) BODY (6 pages)
-Apply the concepts from readings (i.e. community cultural wealth, problem posing, contextualized mentoring etc...) to your counterstory.
-Theory-building: Does your counterstory develop a new concept and/or challenges existing concepts (i.e. social capital)
-Analyze, rather than describe
-Think of secondary sources as “how to” guide for writing your original paper
-Use subheadings to organize your paper
-Avoid unintentional borrowing that results in plagiarism.
To avoid plagiarism use quote marks or footnote page numbers.
-Avoid too many BLOCK QUOTES
4) Conclusion (1 Page)
- Restate your research thesis and main argument
-So What!!!! Why should we care about your topic?
-What new idea(s) did you learn from your topic
-Limitations of the study
5) Bibliography (1 page)
Should include:
-Web sources
-Books
-Journal Articles
-Newspaper Articles
