CES 305/WMST 302/SOC 302:

Course Requirements

Class Attendance/Participation: (10%)
It is to your benefit to come to class regularly. You are allowed three absences with no questions asked. If after that you will miss class due to college approved extracurricular activities you should bring copies of a form, signed by the official sponsor of the activity (e.g., coach) noting the dates that you will be absent. If you miss class due to a family emergency, illness, mandated court appearances and the like submit a written explanation of your absence or contact The Office of Student Affairs (Lighty 360, 335-4531). Your participation is important. I expect you to contribute to class discussions and participate actively in class discussions and activities. In terms of participation it is important that you write down your thoughts and questions to improve the quality of your contribution to discussions. I expect every student to show respect for others' opinions and perspectives and hope to engage each other in a productive dialogue, choosing to agree to disagree when necessary.

· Midterm Exam (25%)
Each student must complete a midterm exam that covers the first half of the course. Students will be responsible for the information conveyed in the reading assignments, lectures, class discussions and videos. There will be no substitute work, alternate exam dates, or make-up exams without documented illness or emergency.  The Midterm Exam is due October 16th.

· Final Exam (25%)
There will be a take-home final exam that will cover the material from the first half to the second half of the semester. Students will be responsible for the information conveyed in the reading assignments, lectures, class discussions and videos. The final will be a take-home exam distributed on the last day of class and will be in the form of essay questions. The Final Exam is due December 11th.

· Masculinity Paper (40%)
The purpose of this research paper is to refine your library research and critical thinking skills. Students are required to choose at least five academic sources (books and scholarly journal articles) on a chosen topic related to masculinity issues. A list of topics will be posted on the course website. The topic and proposal needs to be approved by the instructor. The paper should not be shorter than 10 pages and no longer than 12 pages.  The final research project is due on the last day of class.
