RACIAL PROFILING AT BREWSTER, WA

C.E.S SUPPORTS LATINO PARENTS' LAWSUIT AGAINST BREWSTER SCHOOL DISTRICT. The Department of Comparative Ethnic Studies at Washington State University supports eight Latino parents who are suing the Brewster School District for alleged racial discrimination in federal court. Brewster is south of Omak in Okanogan County in north-central Washington State. Parent complaints with the school district began on Nov. 6, 2003 when 27 Latino students were singled out for discipline by the Brewster High School Principal because he was concerned about recent "gang fights" and only Latino students were subsequently disciplined.  The students' parents were never notified of the meeting and no Anglo students who were involved in the fights or belonged to a "white gang" called "Orchard Monkey Killers" were called to the library nor disciplined. In August 2004, the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights found the district in violation of Latino students' civil rights.  Since the guilty verdict the school district has failed to take appropriate steps to address racial discrimination and harrassment inside the school. It is time that the Brewster School District be held accountable for creating a hostile environment for Latino students, many of whom which to attend colleges and universities, like Washington State University.
